Cutting isn't rooting after several weeks. Almost always one of: missing node, stagnant/unchanged water, or low light. Confirm a visible node is submerged (water method) or below the soil line (soil method), refresh water every 2–3 days, and move to bright indirect light.
Leaves turning yellow during propagation. Usually overwatering or stress. In water propagation, remove any submerged leaves (they rot and foul the water). In soil, let the top layer dry slightly between waterings.
Roots are forming but very slowly. Check season and temperature first — propagation in fall/winter is dramatically slower for nearly every plant on this list. A heat mat (~22°C/72°F substrate temp) and supplemental grow light close most of the gap.
Can I propagate from a leaf with no node? Depends on the plant. Prayer plants, pothos, philodendron, monstera, and hoya — no, a leaf alone will not root; you need a node. Snake plant, African violet, and succulents like jade — yes, leaf-only propagation works because these species root from leaf or petiole tissue rather than stem nodes.
When do I move a water-rooted cutting into soil? Once roots are roughly 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm) long. Longer water roots are thin and brittle and often snap or struggle during the transition — pot up promptly rather than waiting for a bigger root mass.
Is water or soil propagation "better"? Water is easier to monitor and generally faster to show visible roots; soil produces sturdier roots adapted to their final growing medium and skips the transplant-shock step. Many growers start in water for visibility, then pot up once roots appear.
